Big A and the Allstars kicked things off for the 2023 Fridays at the Stage band performances on May 5. The Crossroads Economic Partnership organizes Fridays at the Stage every year. Fridays at the Stage is where bands play at the Delta Blues Museum Stage from 7 to 10 p.m. each Friday during the month of May.

Anthony “Big A” Sherrod is the band leader for Big A and the Allstars and played the guitar. Preston Rumbaugh played the bass. Jaxx Nassar filled in on the drums for the usual band member Lee Williams on Friday night. Williams, who is Sherrod’s cousin, was in Greenwood on Friday night but came back while the band was still on stage and watched some of the performance.

“It was awesome,” Sherrod said. “We had a good time. This was my first time in years. It feels great to be back up here.”

Sherrod enjoyed the uniqueness of playing outside on Friday. “It’s outdoors,” he said. “It feels good. There’s not as much body heat out here like when we’re on the inside. We had a wonderful time.”

Sherrod does not interact with the audience as often when Big A and the Allstars are outside. However, he finds unique ways to involve the audience. “When I see kids, I take them to the stage, and that makes me feel a whole lot better,” he said.

Sherrod appreciated the crowd that came to see his band play on Friday. “God bless everybody,” he said. “We had fun.”

Sherrod played songs from his CDs and some of his new songs, including “Everybody Ain’t Your Friend.” “I’ve been trying to work with it and trying to make another hit,” he said.

Sherrod played at Ground Zero Blues Club on Saturday night, will be in Booneville, New Jersey, from June 1 to 4, and then touring Dublin, Ireland.

The Delta String Band played at the Delta Blues Museum Stage on May 12. The Rustenhaven Band will be playing on May 19. David Dunavent will be playing on May 26. All performances will be from 7 to 10 p.m.
