BRANDON, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi police officer was shot and significantly injured Thursday while responding to a call about one person holding another person hostage inside a home, the state Department of Public Safety said.
The officer was shot in Brandon, a suburb of Jackson. The Brandon Police Department officer was taken to a local hospital, while the person believed to be the shooter remained barricaded inside the home for several hours, Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bailey Martin said in a statement.
Brandon police told WLBT-TV that the standoff began as a domestic dispute between a man and a woman.
Police Chief Wayne Dearman said the department received a call at 1:45 a.m., WAPT-TV reported. After talking for more than an hour with the suspect, the department’s SWAT team got into the house and rescued the hostage.
Dearman said the home’s electricity was shut off before dawn, and officers were working to talk the suspect into surrendering. Dearman said the wounded officer was stable and talking.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is examining the case, as it does with most shootings of or by law enforcement officers in the state. After the investigation is finished, MBI will give its findings to the state attorney general’s office, Martin said.
