An unoccupied vehicle was found in the Sunflower River next to the bridge on State Street at around 9 a.m. Thursday. “Through our investigation, we have determined who the car belongs to,” said Clarksdale Police Department Captain of Criminal Investigation LJ Peters.
Peters said the police department was attempting to determine the whereabouts of the vehicle’s owner before releasing a name. The vehicle appeared to be a Chevy Impala that went down the hill next to the river, but the time it happened has not been determined.

The vehicle had no license plate, but an iPhone was found inside. Lutts Wrecker Service recovered the vehicle at approximately 11:15 a.m. Thursday. The Clarksdale Fire Department assisted the police department after it was discovered that the vehicle was in the river. “This morning, we responded to a vehicle submerged in the water. They pointed to the vehicle down there. We couldn’t tell if anybody was in the vehicle, so we had to wait on the fire department,” Peters said. “The fire department arrived and verified no one was inside the vehicle.”
