Clarksdale, Mississippi – In 2021, Antonetta Holly initiated the Walmart Walk for Autism, driven by her son’s non-verbal autism and her passion to advocate for autism awareness. Teaming up with Walmart store manager Joe Matthews, the event has become a significant annual gathering, drawing support from various communities and organizations.

The latest walk saw an impressive turnout from different groups, showcasing the unity and support for autism awareness. Delta Manor, a local organization dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities, was among the participants, demonstrating their commitment to the cause.

The Coahoma County School District played a crucial role in the event, with an impressive 190 students joining the walk. This strong presence reflects the district’s dedication to supporting students with autism and their families. Cheerleaders and basketball players from Coahoma County High School (CCHS) added to the lively atmosphere, showing their support in solidarity.

The Clarksdale City School District also made a significant contribution, with 30 students and the district’s superintendent participating in the walk. Their involvement highlights the importance of raising awareness and fostering inclusivity in educational settings.

The presence of CCHS Superintendent Dr. Young underscored the district’s commitment to supporting initiatives like the Walk for Autism. Dr. Young’s attendance served as a testament to the importance of community engagement in addressing the needs of individuals with autism.

Furthermore, the Community Outreach, Inc. (COI) and a local group home joined the event, demonstrating the widespread support for autism awareness in the community. Their involvement emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts in advocating for individuals with autism.

Antonetta Holly, the driving force behind the Walmart Walk for Autism, brings a unique perspective as an assistant Special Education (SPED) teacher at CCHS. Alongside SPED teacher Florence Carver, Holly’s passion and dedication have been instrumental in organizing this annual event, creating a platform for raising awareness and fostering understanding about autism.

As the Walmart Annual Walk for Autism continues to grow each year, it serves as a symbol of hope and unity for individuals and families affected by autism. Through collective efforts and community support, the event strives to create a more inclusive and understanding society for individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
