Clarksdale, Mississippi – For 45 years, the first weekend in May has been a special time in Friars Point, Mississippi. It’s Friars Point Day weekend, a celebration deeply rooted in the community’s history and spirit. This year, the festivities were marked by the Country Roots Cowboy Boots Parade, paying homage to the town’s rich heritage and honoring its past citizens.

Barbara Rowe Jakes, the Parade Organizer, made a poignant decision to name the parade “Country Roots Cowboy Boots” as a tribute to those who have passed away, leaving indelible marks on Friars Point. Among the notable figures was the Grand Marshal, Marcia Martin, representing her father, Dr. McKinley Martin Sr., former President of CCC.

Friars Point Police Chief Fernando Bee led the procession, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants and spectators. The parade featured a vibrant display of community spirit, with the CCHS Band, Friars Point mayor Ralph Scott, and the Friars Point Headstart program adding their own flair to the event.

Charles Nolan, Head of the Friars Point Community Club, played a pivotal role in keeping the Friars Point Day weekend tradition alive. He emphasized the importance of preserving the community’s heritage, stating, “I want to keep our weekend going.”

Mayor Ralph Scott expressed gratitude to everyone involved in making the parade a success, extending a special thanks to the Clarksdale High School Band, Friars Point Police Department, and Coahoma County Sheriff Department for their contributions.

The presence of Vietnam Veterans added a poignant reminder of the town’s contribution to the nation’s history.

As the procession wound its way through the streets, lined with cheering spectators, it was a testament to the resilience and unity of Friars Point. The Country Roots Cowboy Boots Parade not only celebrated the past but also embraced the future, ensuring that the spirit of Friars Point continues to thrive for generations to come.
