Jackson, MS (March 26, 2023) – The public invited to attend the virtual viewing of Black Lives/Black Lungs at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2023. Sponsored by the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health, the film sheds light on the tobacco industry’s impact on the African American community. Created by filmmaker Lincoln Monday, Black Lives/Black Lungs explores the origin, history, and marketing tactics of the $14 billion dollar tobacco industry and its effect on Black smokers. The film features testimonials from experts and social justice activists.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says nearly 90 percent of all African-American smokers use menthol cigarettes. An estimated 45,000 African Americans die each year from tobacco-related illnesses, according to the National African American Tobacco Prevention Network.
